Duterte impeachment 'plane' to crash with 'witless pilots' - SolGen
MANILA - The first impeachment complaint filed against President Rodrigo Duterte, lodged just months after he took office, will inevitably crash and burn because "witless" pilots are behind it, Solicitor General Jose Calida claimed Thursday.
"Impeachment won't fly. It will crash like a rudderless plane flown by witless pilots," Calida said in a statement.
Earlier Wednesday, former soldier turned Magdalo Representative Gary Alejano called for Duterte's removal for alleged high crimes, betrayal of public trust, and abuse of power.
Alejano accused Duterte of various offences he said were worthy of impeachment, from concealing assets and conflicts of interest to drugs-related extrajudicial killings and running an alleged "death squad" when he was Davao City mayor.
But Calida assailed Alejano's credibility, branding him as a "toady of his braggart patron -- Sen. [Antonio] Trillanes," a fierce critic of Duterte.
Trillanes and Alejano were accused of leading several attempts to oust former president Gloria Arroyo when they were still with the military.
"They must be dreaming. They are not even in the league of Don Quixote," Calida said of the pair, alluding to a fictional knight who lost his sanity before seeking to revive chivalry. -- With Reuters
