Alejano says filing of impeach raps vs. Duterte not part of Senate bid
Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano denied accusations that his impeachment complaint against President Rodrigo Duterte is part of his bid for the Senate in 2019.
According to a report on GMA News TV's News TV Live on Friday, Alejano said he has no plans of seeking a Senate seat, adding that the Magdalo group will be the one to choose its candidates for certain positions.
The same television report quoted Alejano, a former Marine captain and vocal critic of Duterte at the House of Representatives, as saying that it has been MalacaƱang’s practice to come up with issues to divert attention.
Alejano filed his supplemental complaint-affidavit two weeks after he filed the impeachment rap against the President.
In his supplemental affidavit, he slammed Duterte for “failing or refusing” to assert the country’s rights over disputed territories with China, including Benham Rise, Panatag Shoal, and other areas in the West Philippine Sea.
Aside from Alejano’s supposed plans to run as senator, MalacaƱang also claimed that the additional complaint was the lawmaker’s way of maximizing his media exposure.
“The supplemental impeachment complaint-affidavit filed by Magdalo Representative Gary Alejano against the President is unfounded, lacking both in form and substance; but more seriously it seems that this is part and parcel of his intention to run for the Senate to replace Senator Trillanes,” Palace spokesperson Ernesto Abella earlier said in a statement.
“The political tactic of filing an ‘incomplete’ impeachment complaint on the first day of recess of the [House of Representatives] then to ‘supplement’ it on a different day seems geared towards providing media mileage for the proponent,” Abella added. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA News
