Duterte frowns on impeach raps vs. him, Robredo —Panelo
President Rodrigo Duterte believes impeachment complaints against him and Vice Presiden Leni Robredo would detract Congress from more pressing concerns that need legislative action, Duterte's top legal counsel said on Wednesday.
“As he said, he is against any impeachment move against any of them because it will only—not only damage, I think it will be destructive for all. Instead of focusing on the national concerns, servicing the people, we’ll be engaged in politics. We have had enough of that for the last so many decades,” presidential legal counsel Salvador Panelo said.
House leaders on Monday said that it would prioritize the impeachment complaint against Duterte.
“They can always try, but I don’t think it will succeed. There is an overwhelming majority number in the Congress that supports the President as well as the overwhelming majority of the Filipinos in support of him too,” Panelo said.
“I think the impeachment is only intended for propaganda by the one who will file it and those who are supporting it to smear the President. But I don’t think it will ever succeed,” he added.
Meanwhile, the impeachment complaint against Robredo is yet to get an endorsement from any lawmaker.
“As the President says, any impeachment filed against those who have won the votes should not be pursued because it will only derail whatever legislative agenda the Congress has. They may be focusing on a matter that should not be tackled on at this time. I share the President’s sentiment,” the presidential law said. —NB, GMA News
